The Flame of a Candle is Gaston Bachelard at his most intimate — a philosophical reverie on fire as a symbol of the psyche, moving through meditations on the candle, the lamp, and the flame as it appears in the natural world. Chapters including "The Solitude of the Candle Dreamer" and "Poetic Images of the Flame in Plant Life" reveal Bachelard's singular gift for finding the vast within the small, and the philosophical within the everyday.
Bachelard (1884–1962) is widely regarded as one of the most significant French thinkers of the twentieth century, whose work across twenty-three books touched every discipline of the humanities — architecture, literature, poetics, psychology, and philosophy among them. He held the chair of history and philosophy of science at the Sorbonne from 1940 to 1962, and received the Grand Prix National Lettres in 1961, one of only three philosophers ever to have done so.
This English translation by Joni Caldwell is part of The Bachelard Translations, a series initiated by Joanne H. Stroud of The Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture to bring Bachelard's untranslated works on the imagination to English-speaking readers.

RETURNS
Full-priced items may be returned within 14 days of delivery. Sale items are final sale.
To start a return, drop us a line at hello@surfurbia.com. Once approved, return shipping is the responsibility of the customer — we offer a flat-rate return label for $8 if you'd like one, just let us know. Please ship your item back within 7 days, with tracking, in its original packaging and unused. We'd suggest insuring the shipment for the original retail value, as lost or damaged packages remain the responsibility of the sender.
Refunds are processed within 14 days of receiving your return.
If something arrives damaged, please reach out within 48 hours with photos and a description and we'll sort it out.
A small note on handmade goods — differences in form and finish are part of their character, not a defect.
