This matcha bowl is handmade in Shiga, Japan in the Youhen Ibushi ceramic style — a tradition characterized by raw, angular forms and a deeply textured surface that recalls cooled lava. The organic, wide-mouthed shape is not purely aesthetic; it is designed to give the chasen room to move freely, producing the smooth, frothy consistency that defines a well-prepared matcha.
In the Japanese tea ceremony, the bowl is considered one of the most significant objects in the home — a functional piece elevated over centuries into something closer to sculpture. This example carries that weight without formality, its primitive texture and irregular form making it as compelling to hold as it is to use.
Made from clay with a food-safe glaze. 4.5" diameter, 3" tall, 16 fl oz capacity. Hand wash and dry immediately after use. Avoid sudden temperature changes and keep away from the microwave and dishwasher.
To prepare matcha: fill the bowl with boiling water to warm it, then discard. Add ceremonial-grade matcha with a bamboo ladle, pour in water cooled slightly from boiling, and whisk in an "M" motion with a chasen until a creamy froth forms. Sip directly from the bowl.

We offer standard shipping for $6.95 on orders under $150. Orders over $150 ship free. US orders only.
Your order may arrive in separate shipments if it includes items from different supplier partners — you'll receive individual tracking emails for each. Orders ship via USPS, UPS, or FedEx, and tracking details will be sent once your order is on its way. Most orders are delivered within 6–10 business days from the date of purchase. Orders containing items from multiple suppliers may arrive in separate shipments.
If an item is out of stock or backordered, we'll let you know within 48 hours and offer a refund or the option to wait. For lost shipments, reach out and we'll make it right.

RETURNS
Full-priced items may be returned within 14 days of delivery. Sale items are final sale.
To start a return, drop us a line at hello@surfurbia.com. Once approved, return shipping is the responsibility of the customer — we offer a flat-rate return label for $8 if you'd like one, just let us know. Please ship your item back within 7 days, with tracking, in its original packaging and unused. We'd suggest insuring the shipment for the original retail value, as lost or damaged packages remain the responsibility of the sender.
Refunds are processed within 14 days of receiving your return.
If something arrives damaged, please reach out within 48 hours with photos and a description and we'll sort it out.
A small note on handmade goods — differences in form and finish are part of their character, not a defect.
